Embracing the Unpredictable: My Journey with Alcohol Inks

As an artist, I’m used to having full control over my work—whether I’m sculpting, creating textured paintings, or working with other structured mediums. But when I started experimenting with alcohol inks, I had to embrace something entirely different: fluidity and unpredictability.

The Magic of Alcohol Inks

Unlike traditional painting techniques where every brushstroke is intentional, alcohol inks have a mind of their own. They flow, blend, and expand in ways I can guide but never fully control. By using air, tilting the surface, or adding drops of alcohol, I can influence their movement, but the final result is always a surprise. This balance between guidance and spontaneity is both challenging and exhilarating—watching colours merge, separate, and form patterns that could never be precisely recreated.

Capturing Stunning Details

One of my favourite aspects of working with alcohol ink art is the intricate details that emerge. Metallic gold highlights catch the light, scattered across the surface like cosmic dust. The inks form soft ripples and organic edges, creating a sense of depth and movement that feels alive.

Enhancing Depth with Resin

To amplify this effect, I often seal my alcohol ink paintings with resin. The glossy, glass-like finish enhances the vibrancy of the colours, making them feel even more immersive. Layers of ink appear suspended beneath the surface, shifting with the light and adding a mesmerizing, three-dimensional effect. This combination of alcohol ink and resin art creates pieces that feel fluid, luminous, and constantly evolving.

Learning to Let Go

This medium has been a powerful lesson in embracing imperfection and spontaneity. Unlike my sculpting or textured painting work, where every detail is intentional, alcohol inks teach me to let the materials speak for themselves. It’s a challenge, but one that continues to inspire me. I’m excited to keep exploring this dynamic art form, discovering new techniques, and pushing the boundaries of abstract fluid art.
